Alton Towers is a theme park located near the village of Alton in Staffordshire, England. It is the second most visited theme park in the United Kingdom. The Smiler is a roller coaster at the park, which opened in 2013 and holds the world record for the most inversions of a roller coaster.
Synopsis[]
We see a village that looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie and a bird dropping a lollipop with a yellow and black swirled design on it. The camera then pans to a man in the ride queue with swirls for eyes and a weird smile on his face, he is joined by some teenagers and the ride starts. Soon, the teenagers' eyes look like his and he turns and says "You belong to the Smiler!"
Why It's Cursed[]
Despite being a real ride, this commercial seems to use a lot of CGI effects. It doesn't help that its logo and advertising is a creepy face.
Trivia[]
In addition to TV commercials, the ride had a viral campaign to promote it, which included projecting the creepy smiley face logo on various buildings and landmarks around England, including Big Ben and spray painting sheep!
