Mac Tonight Compilation

The infamous Moon Man ads

This 1980s campaign for McDonald's's (then) new late night hours did not age well.

Synopsis[]

There are several of these, as the campaign ran from 1986-1997. Most of them involve the character, Mac Tonight, singing a McDonald's themed parody of Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife". He is usually playing a piano and singing above a lit-up city on top of a giant Big Mac in the ads, however, in another version of the ads, he is singing a version of the song that is about going to McDonald's for breakfast. In another version, he appears after a boy hums the tune, causing Mac to appear and give him a Big Mac. In another ad, he sings a faster paced version of the song, and that McDonald's is holding a contest to win prizes off drink cups there. In another ad, Mac appears in toy form in a promotion for Mac Tonight toys. In yet another ad, he sings his normal song again, and then a young man announces that (at the time) they're selling Big Macs for only 99 cents and holding a contest to win a camcorder (obviously, this contest ended over 30 years ago). In the last ad mentioned here, he appears in animatronic form after a woman runs to McDonald's after having a "Big Mac Attack." I could go on and on, but there are so many of these it could take up the entire wiki.

Why It's Cursed[]

There are a few reasons that these commercials are cursed, and here they are:

1: Mac Tonight, having a crescent moon for a head, is pretty creepy to some people. He's even creepier without his sunglasses.

2: The song McDonald's is parodying in the ads is actually really dark if you pay attention to the lyrics, which pertain to murder.

3: Mac himself is actually a very controversial character nowadays, due to frequently being used in extremely violent, racist, and homophobic spoofs of popular rap songs under the name "Moon Man".
