Mountain Dew - USA - 1960s
The, "Get That Barefoot Feeling" Mountain Dew ad campaign was a short campaign for the soft drink from 1969 until 1971. The 2 commercials for the campaign showed various different kinds of everyday people happily going barefoot in bizarre, humorous, or social public situations while drinking a bottle of Mountain Dew.
Some newspaper ads and clippings were also made for the short lived campaign.
Ads contained sayings such as: "Here's a taste that'll just knock your socks off" and, "It makes me giggle, it makes me wriggle."
Synopsis[]
Both ads contain numerous different kinds of people, including elderly businessman, football players, crossing guards, policemen, and even actress Joan Crawford going barefoot in various situations while drinking Mountain Dew. Some walk barefooted, while others drink the soda sitting down while wiggling their bare feet and toes on various different surfaces, such as roads and grassy football fields. Other people have a more humorous and "silly" perspective on going barefoot: For example, a man dressed as George Washington sails barefooted while riding across the icy oceans, an astronaut drinks some Mountain Dew while walking barefoot on the moon, and a man in a soldier costume at a museum is barefoot while drinking Mountain Dew.
Why It's Cursed[]
Associating soda with bare feet and toes just sounds gross and kind of strange in general. Furthermore, both of the commercials include many older (and younger) Mountain Dew drinkers wiggling their bare feet and toes into the camera.
The ads also make you feel like the people who made them have a foot fetish.
However, the true meaning behind the ads is that it's just simply a slogan that tries to explain that not just hillbillies can go barefoot while drinking Mountain Dew, many other everyday people can as well. Also, the ads try to explain to the viewer that the drink is as refreshing and as feel good as going barefoot during the summertime.
