Nannerpuss was the name of an ad for breakfast chain Denny's. The ad was created for Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 and advertises a free Grand Slam breakfast at restaurants that could've been ordered on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. An extended ad also aired after, still for the Grand Slam, albeit the promotion was no longer free.
Synopsis[]
On an orange background, "Nannerpuss", a banana designed like an octopus with facial hair, googly eyes, and with tentacles on strings, is seen on top a plate of pancakes, garnished with berries with googly eyes that are on the bottom.
A crowd of people yell "IT'S NANNERPUSS!" in the background, and the puppet starts to dance around and sings "You can call me, Nannerpuss! Nannerpuss! And guess what, I love pan-" until he gets interrupted by the "FREE GRAND SLAM" screen which slams down. The announcer states "Isn't it time for a serious breakfast? This Tuesday from 6am to 2(pm), Denny's is giving away free a Grand Slam to everyone in America."
Why It's Cursed[]
The commercial instantly became a favorite because of it's creativeness with the bizarre banana and octopus puppet hybrid. And it worked, too, as reportedly two million people showed up at Denny's restaurants across America for the deal, and the ad even increased the website traffic for the Denny's official website (where the ad was also downloadable).
Trivia[]
- On the extended version, the singing isn't interrupted, and the "I love pancakes" line is finished. After that, the crowd yells "NANNERPUSS!" once again, and the announcer at the end reads "Isn't it time for a serious breakfast? The Denny's Grand Slam."
