Spongemonkeys are fictional creatures that appear to be deformed rat homunculi created by British animator Joel Veitch for his website, rathergood.com. The popularity of the rathergood site and its surreal flash animations lead to Veitch being commissioned by various companies to do commercials for them. The most infamous of these was "Spongemonkeys" for Quizno's.
Synopsis[]
The original ad was based on an animation that appeared on Veitch's website called "We Like The Moon", with the lyrics changed to "We Love The Subs".
Why It's Cursed[]
The ads garnered attention, but for not any of the reasons Quizno's wanted. More attention was given to the strangeness of the ads than the product they were actually advertising. Within a few years, Quiznos went from being the second most popular sub sandwich chain in America (behind Subway) to filing for bankruptcy and closing a large number of stores.
