Daytona Usa Sega Saturn Commercial
An eye-poppingly unusual advertisement.
A commercial for the Sega Saturn from 1995, based around the game Daytona USA. Most of it is relatively normal, but there is a single strange and possibly disturbing moment in it.
It is directed by Rocky Morton.
Synopsis[]
The commercial starts with a man walking towards a tall building in the middle of the night. As he enters the building, two women on a raised area inside the building comment that the man executes the games. As the man continues to walk, there is a big screen showing a fighting game playing. He then goes to a fancy-looking car, which he then gets inside. The car is being prepared with various pieces of technology, and when it is ready, two glass tubes extend to go up to his eyes. Then they extract his eyes from their sockets, bringing them towards the ends of the tubes to look closer at gameplay of Daytona USA, in a Sega Saturn that is in the car. He then plays the game in his current state, which is intercut with live-action footage of a man in a car race. Both the in-game car and the live-action car both crash. The man is taken from the car, and as it ends, the camera zooms into his eye, which then transforms into the Sega Saturn logo.
Why It's Cursed[]
The eye extraction scene is bizarre in every way. It is almost painful to watch for sensitive viewers, and while it is "clean" due to the lack of blood or gore, that doesn't exactly help this commercial's case. In addition, the idea of playing a Sega Saturn while in a car is also a strange one.
Trivia[]
- According to YouTube user Back to the Past!, this commercial ran in theaters in the UK, where it got a 15 rating from the BBFC. Others note it appearing on TV as well.
- YouTube user Diamondbolt featured this commercial in his video "FUNNY VIDEO GAME COMMERCIALS". He was shocked by the eye extraction at first, calling it "not okay", then he nervously asks if that is optional. He then points out how the console didn't do well.
