Scary You Cannot Beat Us Commercial for Nintendo

Not scary at all, trust me!

The Commercial[]

This commercial was created to advertise the then brand-new Nintendo Entertainment System and features various enemies from Nintendo games (the dog from Duck Hunt, a Smick from Gyromite and Stack-Up, and Lakitu and Bowser from Super Mario Bros.). Most of the narration is done by a computer animated man, most likely a representation of a Nintendo employee. The tagline for this commercial, "You cannot beat us", had a double meaning, as it could be referencing the difficulty of the games on the system, as well as being a message to their competitors at the time.

(Whoever modeled Lakitu needs reference sheets.)

Why It's Cursed[]

While the computer-generated animation may have looked revolutionary in the mid-80's, it's horrendously outdated by today's standards. The models make very little movements (and look weird too), and the voices are very monotone and robotic.

Other information[]

  • This advert is actually part of a series; two of them are of little boys playing the games and beating the enemies in them (which include Kung Fu Master and Super Mario Bros.), while another is a shorter version of this commercial, lasting 30 seconds instead of 45, cutting out the Lakitu's part completely.
    • There is also a fifth commercial that mostly reuses footage from the Super Mario Bros. commerical, although there is a new section dedicated to the game Tennis.
    • If one listens closely, the shorter commercial seems to had toned down the robotic effects, presumably so it wouldn't be as scary for young children.
  • This is one of the first times Bowser has ever spoke.
  • This advertisment gained a boost in popularity after its appearance in the Friday Night Funkin' mod Mario's Madness. The song, Unbeatable, features the man (renamed to Mr. SyS), Duck Hunt Dog, and Bowser as opponents. It also includes Smick, Lakitu, and heads that resemble Mr. SyS on the side during more intense parts of the song.
    • "SyS" stands for "Steal your Soul". In reference to the line "Are you stealing my soul while i watch you?" from the Nostalga Critic Episode "Rise of the Commercials". It is also short for System.
